Second Grade:
Book Fair:
During class, and at home, students will work on creating a tri-fold board to represent and explain their chapter book. Students will study and analyze the main character in their book and develop a board that is science-fairesc. At the end of the project students will present their boards and answer questions at a Book Fair, in our Media Center.
Third Grade:
Toys Through Time:
TTT is a project that Idlewild has participated in for the past 22 years. Through the course of this project students learn to manage, break apart and create a product that encourages them to step outside the box as a toy creator. Students take a toy and a historical event, person, decade or social issue and change it's original intent to teach other children about their topic. For example Raggedy Ann may teach about Amelia Earhart as the first female pilot and her accomplishments. An awards ceremony will be held at the Levine Museum of the New South in the spring.
*TTT is worked on both at home and at school.
Fourth Grade:
LittleJim:
Students will read the novel, Hatchet, and create a "ShortCut" comic strip (originally found in the Sunday Paper) based on the topic of their choice. Over the course of the novel students will learn about survival and adaptations, and then connect that to Canadian Wilderness and different aspects of survival working on completing their research project. Students will imporve their critical thinking, research skills, and writing with supportive elaboration and details. Students (parents are encouraged to attend) will attend a luncheon in November to conclude their project and enjoy a LittleJim inspired banquet.
Fifth Grade:
Inquiry Project:
Our 5th grade Inquiry Project is modeled after the CMS Senior Exit Project. Students will select a topic that is science, social studies, or social issue based and complete thorough research and note taking on that topic. They will then turn their research in to a research paper and product that teach others about what they learned. This will be the 5th year of our 5th graders completing this project and the depth of their knowledge and research is always impressive. This project is a year long project that prepares our 5th graders for middle, high school and even college by teaching them to use time-management, research and creative/critical thinking skills throughout the course of the school year.
